Raju Shrestha

He had been formerly acknowledged as Master Raju when he used to star as a child in various Bollywood films during the 70s. Although he was a hit as a child, he didn’t rise as a star in Bollywood after reaching his youth. There was a time when he had performed as a child in films such as Gulzar’s Parichay (1972), Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Bawarchi (1972), Basu Chatterjee’s Chitchor (1976) and Gulzar’s Kitaab (1977). In Kitaab, he had played the role of a fun-loving schoolboy who flees his sister’s home where he is reprimanded repeatedly for neglecting studies. For this role, he had won a Filmfare Award. He had also won a National Film Award for Best Child Artist for his performance as a child in Chitchor (1976). In the 70s, Raju’s performance as a child had been striking to the audience. But in his latter films, he appeared mostly in supporting roles which didn’t garner him equal prominence.

Since his early start of career, Raju Shrestha has acted in more than 200 films and numerous television serials. In the latter part of his life, he is more often seen in television serials and daily soaps. In the serial Bani- Ishq Da Kalma, he plays the role of an uncle of the antagonist Parmeet who is an NRI married to the protagonist Bani. As one of the heirs to the paternal property, he is shown to be amidst a cold war between his brothers and nephew. Raju made his debut as a voiceover artist in 2012 for Ang Lee’s Oscar winning film Life of Pi. In it, he provides voice for the protagonist actor Suraj Sharma. Raju has also made his debut as a director and his first venture is a Punjabi film.
