Ayesha Takia-Azmi

An advertisement of the 90s with a catchy line ‘I am a Complan Boy! I am a Complan girl!’ creates nostalgia when that Complan girl is seen today in Ayesha Takia. The adorable Complan girl has today grown up into a charming heroine. And the Complan boy of that advertisement was Shahid Kapoor, who is a renowned star today. Shahid’s father Pankaj Kapoor was already into filmdom, but Ayesha’s parents were not so.Interestingly, Ayesha is of mixed blood with her father being a Gujarati and her mother an Anglo Indian of British and Maharastrian blend.

With the Complan commercial in her childhood and an education to pursue, Ayesha didn’t recede from plummeting into moviedom. For this sake, she had to withdraw from her education at a young age of 16. By then, she had already finished her schooling at St. Anthony’s High School in Mumbai. And her career in films coerced her against attending college.

The Complan ad was not the only gravitation towards moviesfor Ayesha. At the age of 15, she had performed in pop singer Falguni Pathak’s music video ‘Meri Chunar Udd Udd Jaye’. And then, at the age of 18, she performed in the music video ‘Shake it Daddy’ that triggered her entry into Bollywood. Her foremost casting was in the film Taarzan: The Wonder Car (2004). She had even signed a contract then to act in the movie Socha Na Tha which had a delayed release in 2004. Her performance in her debut film Tarzaan: The Wonder Car was outstanding enough that she won the Filmfare Best Debut Award in 2004, the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female, and Star’s Sabsey Favourite Nayi Heroine Award. She was also nominated for many other awards.

Like it isfor every other actor, some of the films of Ayesha had also not become successful. But some spurts of success did come by. In the lower budget film Dor (2006), she performed as a Rajasthani widow in an orthodox joint family. Her touchy portrayal won her manifold accolades and awards which included the Screen Award for Best Actress (Critics), Zee Cine Award- Critics’ Choice Best Actress, Bengal Film Journalists’ Association- Best Actress Award, and the Stardust Best Supporting Actress Award.

Ayesha’s stardom also seeped down south with her role in the Telugu film Super (2005) which had her star opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna. This too garnered her a Filmfare Best Actress Award (Telugu). Ayesha turned back to Bollywood again from here. Her next superhit came in the form of Wanted (2009), which was directed by Prabhu Deva. In this, she had co-starred with Salman Khan. A couple of years later, she starred in Mod, which earned her further appreciation. In 2012, Ayesha took to the small screen by anchoring in the four month long television singing reality-show Sur Kshetra.

Ayesha Takia had dated Siddharth Koirala and Ashmit Patel in various times. Her relationship with Ashmit Patel brokeoff when an MMS clip of Ashmit with Riya Sen was leaked. In March 2009, Takia finally married Farhan Azmi, a restaurateur and son of a Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi.Planned earlier for 2008, their marriage was delayed in consequence of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
